Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an extremely serious condition to have as it is caused by a traumatic experience. The debate is about whether stress hypnosis can be used to treat PTSD? What is PTSD? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder resulting from exposure to intense trauma such as serving during wartime or being raped. According to DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association 4th ed), the requirements for a diagnosis of PTSD include the following Criteria:
- A1 - Exposure to an extreme traumatic stressor involving direct experience of an event involving actual or threatened death, injury, or other threat to one’s physical integrity; or witnessing an event involving death, injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of another; or learning about unexpected or violent death, serious harm, or threat of death or injury experienced by a family member or other close associate.
- A2 - The person’s response must involve intense fear, helplessness, or horror.
- B - Persistent re-experiencing of the traumatic event.
- C - Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma and numbing of general responsiveness.
- D - Persistent symptoms of increased arousal.
- E - The full symptom picture must be present for >1 month.
- F - The disturbance must cause clinically significant distress/impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
Learning To Manage PTSD
Education about PTSD is advised as a first step in the treatment of the disorder. Many different types of psychotherapy are currently being used in the treatment of PTSD; however, the most successful ones seem to be those based on a cognitive behavioral approach. This approach addresses such methods as situational exposure and eye movement desensitization. A regimen of mood suppression drugs, antidepressants, and sleep aids such as Prazosin (which suppresses nightmares) may be prescribed to the sufferer as a means of treating their PTSD.
May A Normal Life Be Maintained?
Even though many people suffering from PTSD may be inclined to live a somewhat reclusive life, there are those who chose to try to reintegrate with the general population. All assistance possible should be given to these individuals so that they are able to transition well. This is the pinnacle in the treatment of a sufferer of PTSD. The disorder may not ever go away, but with proper medical and mental treatment, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder does not have to impose a lifetime of isolation. Maybe alternative therapies such as stress hypnosis are worth a look at here.
